Today I was at Wal-Mart, not to pick up donations but to purchase some food to supplement our backpack program. As I was checking out, the cashier asked if I happen to work for the Campus Kitchen. Score one, people recognize that someone buying small cans of veggies in ridiculous quantities would be from the Campus Kitchen. When I answered yes, she proceeded to ask if we served lunch at RAOC (Rockbridge Area Occupational Center) today. Once again, yes.
Turns out the friendly cashier is the mother of one of our clients. We chatted for a bit about how great her daughter is, and then she pulled out some photos of her last horseback riding competition.
I love that this job helps me make connections across the community, and I love meeting people (like mothers) just as interested and concerned about our clients as we are.
