The State’s Statistics are In!

The Backpack Program is nothing new for the Campus Kitchen, we began offering snacks for students eligible for Free or Reduced Lunch at Natural Bridge Elementary School in November of 2009.  In September 2010 we included Fairfield Elementary in the program.  The Virginia Department of Education posts the percentage of students in each school district who receive free/reduced lunch and the statistics have just come in for the 2010-11 Academic Year.

66.42% of Natural Bridge Elementary Students are eligible for free or reduced lunch, up from 64.66% in 2009-10.  54.05% of Fairfield Elementary Students are eligible for free or reduced lunch, up from 49.03% in 2009-10.  In an average week we send 155 backpacks full of snacks home with these students.

Does you Campus Kitchen have access to dry goods?  How could a Backpack Program work for you?  Feel free to contact campuskitchen@wlu.edu if you have any questions!
