The Campus Kitchens Project has focused in on food deserts previously, noting how they are mapped, and many specific instances (see the list here). We blogged about the rates in Rockbridge. The Roanoke Times had an article this past Sunday about food deserts within Roanoke. The article details the struggle a woman without regular access to a grocery store has in choosing fresh and healthy foods, needing them to last through the month for her family. In Rockbridge even acccessing the local food pantries can be tricky in terms of location, and when you add in the limited hours, food can be hard to come by.
Our Campus Kitchen serves meals in Glasgow each week. Our Backpack Program began in Natural Bridge and also includes Fairfield. We’re expanding to include Central and Waddell this year. We have more resources! Where else in Rockbridge County do you see the biggest need??? Leave us a comment and maybe you’ll see us there next!
