The Campus Kitchen at Washington and Lee University is a program committed to providing hunger relief in Rockbridge County. We do this through recycling food: receiving donations of food items from the Marketplace, Wal-Mart, Aramark at VMI, Kroger, local fraternities, and restaurants and using this food to feed our community.

In Rockbridge County, we work with 15 agencies.  Based on the needs of each agency, we provide either a hot meal to serve, cold meals that can be heated at our clients’ convenience, or dry and canned goods. Serving hot meals gives us the opportunity to build true community with our clients as we serve and eat with them.

Ingrid Easton ’06 brought the Campus Kitchens Project to Washington and Lee after a summer internship with CKP’s parent organization, the DC Central Kitchen.  CKWL is integrated into the University through the Shepherd Program for Povery and Human Capabilities Studies.

The mission of The Campus Kitchens Project is to use service as a way to:

  • Strengthen Bodies by using existing resources to meet hunger and nutritional needs in our communities
  • Empower Minds by providing leadership and service-learning opportunities to college students, and educational benefits to adults, seniors, children, and families in need
  • Build Communities by fostering a new generation of community-minded adults through resourceful and mutually beneficial partnerships among students, social service agencies, businesses, and universities
